Although George Washington made many wise statements that people should listen to, here are a noted few:

  1. Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.
  2. Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence.
  3. Friendship is a plant of slow growth and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.
  4. Government is not reason, it is not eloquent; it is force, like fire, it is a dangerous servant and fearful master.
  5. If we desire to secure peace, one of the most powerful instruments of our rising prosperity, it must be known, that we are at all times ready for war.
  6. The Constitution is the guide which I will never abandon.
  7. It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible.
  8. Laws made by common consent must not be trampled on by individuals.
